Visual prayer: the secret code

Visual Prayer is an amazing tool that will help you stay focused as you pray. You don't need to be creative in order to practice Visual Prayer, so don't run off if you are worried about that.

All you need in order to do The Secret Code Prayer is

  1. A pen

  2. Graph Ruled Index Cards or Graph Paper (which I have provided below)

  3. A timer (optional)

When you are ready to pray, you simply write your prayer one letter at a time, writing each individual letter in each box. DO NOT skip spaces or lines. Choose either only upper case (which is how I prefer to do it) or all lower case. Spelling does not matter! Punctuation does not matter! When you come to the end of the line, you simply continue on the next line, even if you are mid-word. The purpose is not to fill up the card/page, but to pray consistently for 5 minutes.

YAY! CONGRATULATIONS! GREAT JOB! Now that you have completed the Secret Code Prayer, I'm eager for you to answer the following questions:

  • What did you notice while using the Secret Code Prayer?

  • Did you find praying this way helpful or unhelpful?

  • Did the 5 minutes go fast or slow?

  • How did the style of Secret Code shape your experience of praying?

For me, 5 minutes went so so fast! I remember my first attempt was a little unatural... but I was able to stay focused and felt a connection unlike I do when I'm praying silently to myself. I like the fact that I can see my prayers on paper but it takes effort to read so its not something someone would pick up and read. I find this type of visual prayer very helpful and I'm excited to hear your thoughts on it as well.... BUT Maybe the secret code prayer wasn't your thing, I challenge you to try the other methods of visual prayer, you can find them linked below:

Keep praying sweet friends!
